Flying North for the Summer

From Ottawa to Iqaluit

It was +28 C the day I left Edmonton to fly north. Originally my flight would leave at 10:15am and would arrive in Ottawa at 4pm. Since my next flight was at 9:15am the next morning I would have to spend the night there. Thankfully, I switched my flight to one departing from Edmonton at 11:55pm, giving me an extra day in the warmth. All day all I could think was that I was a goose flying north for the summer.

The lady checking my boarding pass and passport asked me to step aside for a second (assuring me I wasn’t in trouble), and a moment later handed me a new boarding pass. Thanks to a weight imbalance and the fact that I was flying alone I was upgraded to business class! I sat next to a sweet old lady who told me she hadn’t been on a plane for 33 years. Throwing my original, responsible plan of sleeping on the plane out the window I decided to watch Black Panther instead. Turns out it was a great decision because I was awake for the hot towels, snacks (chocolate bars and chips), drinks, and full breakfast service given out in business class. I slept a little on the way to Iqaluit from Ottawa.

Arriving in Iqaluit around noon I was welcomed by me friend Denise! She is spending her summer up north too. We had lunch together and she showed me around town as I took lots of pictures. Slideshow below:

My final flight from Iqaluit to Pang was a blur – I was extremely tired and slept through most of it. I managed to take a few pictures of the beautiful view though and arrived in Pang at 4pm. Everybody stared at me in the tiny airport (which was one room) as I waited for my new supervisor to come pick me up. All three of my bags also made it safe and after dropping them off at the Fjordview B&B we went for a tour of the community. That night I had dinner and went to bed around 8pm and slept for 13 hours! The adventure had officially begun.
